Amistad National Park

Overview

Located between Panama and Costa Rica the Amistad National Park is widely considered to be the first Bi-National Reserve the world over.  The Panamanian side of Amistad National Park covers over 500,000 acres of rainforests, the vast majority of which lies in the province of Bocas del Toro with a small portion being in the province of Chiriqui.  The two main rivers that run through the park, the Teribe and the Changuinola have promising potential as far as hydraulic development in concerned.

 

How to get from Panama City to Amistad National Park

Fly or drive to David, which is in Chiriqui. From David you go to Cerro Punta which is about an hour away. Once you are in Cerro Punta you just find the Administration Center of the park which is only 5 kilometers away.

You could also visit the Bocas del Toro side of the park.  To get to the Bocas del Toro side of the park you would go from David to Changuinola and then travel by car to El Silencio.  To get From El Silencio to the Administration Center (of Amistad National Park) you travel by boat for about half an hour.

 

Things to do at Amistad National Park

Activities at Amistad National Park include rafting, bird watching and hiking to name a few.  At over 6,000 feet above sea level you have to be prepared to exert yourself at a high altitude.  In Panajungla, which is on the Bocas del Toro side, you can see many exotic birds and experience the jungle up close.  Take in the different cultures as you observe the local Indian villages like the Teribes.  The Teribe river is a popular place to go rafting and fishing.

Go on a wonderful and beautiful hike on the Cascada trail and discover the breathtaking beauty of the green landscape and exotic fauna.  Go bird watching down the Retono trail and observe the dense jungle and exotic flora.

The three main towns around the park are Cerro Punta, Volcan and Changuinola.  There is easy access to health centers, banks, hotels, and guides.
