Overview The tropical rainforest spans 1,400,000 acres and sits in the eastern part of the country. It is the largest protected area of Central America and the Caribbean. Darien National Park includes mountain ranges and rivers. The forests feature many extravagant species that are unique to this area alone.
From Panama City you can fly to El Real, the closest town to the park. Or, if you want to travel by car and enjoy the scenery, drive to Yaviza and take the boat to El Real.
What to do in Darien Darien offers a wide range of activities. From bird watching to hiking and coming in contact with the Indians of the Wounan tribes. There are many unique things to experience in Darien National Park. See the exotic flora and fauna as you hike through the jungle. Take boat trips along the river. For bird watchers this park is especially attractive. In the center of the park, near the remains of the Espiritu Santo Gold Mines is a world famous site for bird watching. If you are lucky you may be entertained by the indigenous Indian tribes with dancing and other customs found only in Darien.
